Sad news from the Art front...Robert Rauschenberg died last night at the age of 82. While Modern art can sometimes drive me batty, I always LOVED Rauschenberg's work. He had such an eloquent way of dissasembling the notions of modernism set up by Clement Greenberg during the 40s and 50s. He opened up new realms of expression by specifically contradicting the idea that art should conform to its medium and that the mixing of media is inherently inappropriate.
His work is extremely complex and multi-layered. Despite his own expressionistic approach that essentially voiced his personal views about life, love, politics, and faith, Rauschenberg's art is highly accessible to the average viewer. We can all see in his work something that resonates, angers, overjoys, or otherwise impacts our mind and soul.
Goodbye, Rauschenberg...thank you for your incredible spirit and work.
